Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI or SSD) provides income assistance to those who are disabled and unable to work. Here are a few things you should know when thinking about applying for Social Security Disability. This awareness will help you and your family plan while you are disabled.
#1 – You Must Be Fully “Disabled,” i.e., Unable To Be Gainfully Employed
Unfortunately, Social Security does not approve claims where you are only partially disabled. Additionally, the medical basis for your disability must already have lasted or be expected to last 12 months or longer (or be expected to end in death). And your claim will automatically be disapproved if you are performing substantial gainful activity.
#2 – You Must Have Past Work History
You must have worked long enough and recently enough in jobs covered by Social Security. The 10 years immediately prior to when you become disabled are critical.
#3 – The Waiting Periods
The 5-month waiting period—Social Security does not pay benefits during the first 5 full months of disability. The Medicare eligibility waiting period—there is a 24-month waiting period (after the first month of benefit eligibility, i.e., 29 months after being found disabled) to be eligible for Medicare.
#4 – You Might Have to Pay Taxes
If your income is over a certain threshold you may be subject to taxes. This usually happens only if you have other substantial income in addition to your benefits.
