Most people who eventually apply for Social Security disability benefits don’t start out thinking about Social Security disability benefits.
They start out thinking about how to get through the week. How to manage the pain well enough to keep working. How to keep up with everything else in their life while their body makes that harder and harder to do. And underneath all of it, one quiet and persistent question: what happens if I can’t keep going?
That’s where Kate’s story begins. Kate is a fictional person, but her story is not an unusual one. We see versions of it regularly in our office, and we put it together because it reflects what many people experience before they ever pick up the phone.
Kate spent ten years working as a nurse’s aide in Northern Ohio, doing physically demanding work every single day. Over time, chronic back pain started making that work harder and harder to do. She tried treatment. She pushed through. She kept showing up because stopping didn’t feel like something she could afford to do.
Eventually, she couldn’t continue. And that’s when things got complicated.
What followed was a process that was longer and more difficult than she expected. There were insurance denials, paperwork she didn’t know how to navigate, a Social Security disability claim, two denials, a hearing, and an appeal. At more than one point, the right outcome felt far from guaranteed.
But she had people in her corner who knew the process and stayed with her every step of the way. And in the end, she received every benefit she was owed.
If any part of that feels familiar, her full story is worth reading. People in Wayne County, Lorain County, Lucas County, and across Northern Ohio deal with situations like this more often than most people realize. You don’t have to figure it out on your own.
Kate’s story is fictional, but the process she went through is not. Every step in her journey reflects what working with Roose Ressler & Green actually looks like, from the first phone call to the final payment. We put her story together so that people who are considering their options can see exactly what to expect before they ever pick up the phone.
